Hillsboro Community Trust Project
In June of 2021, Jefferson Franklin Community Action Corporation implemented a Community Trust Process for residents within the boundaries of the Hillsboro School District. Using this process, JFCAC sought to empower community residents at the local level to come together and share their ideas for the betterment of the community. The Hillsboro community project selected through the Community Trust process was funded by JFCAC for up to $15,000.
Through a series of community meetings hosted by JFCAC, residents identified initiatives and projects to be considered. These options were then prioritized on June 28, 2022. Thirty-two residents attended the project selection meeting and democratically determined the proposed Discovery Trail Park Improvement plan, for their Community Trust Project. Residents then stepped up to serve as Trustees to lead this project through completion.
The six Community Trustees were: Mandy Alley, Diane Block, Sherri Diestel, Ryan Hurtgen, Bernadette Kennedy, Shelby Seabaugh.
Trustees and other volunteers began work in December of 2022. The Trustees recruited local students, residents, business volunteers, and the support of the City of Hillsboro to conduct the selected project. Trustees also donated many hours of their own time and talents to support the unique and creative Discovery Trail that will serve Hillsboro residents and many others in the years to come.
This beautifully enhance trail in the City Park of Hillsboro is a one-mile loop that includes a unique labyrinth, winter garden, spring nest, summer glade, butterfly garden, obstacle course and large metal wind chimes that one explorer shared they “sounded like crystal singing bowls.
