Skill Up Program

Skill Up is a free educational and empowerment program available to all food stamp recipients. It provides an opportunity to sharpen existing or gain new skills, access to training, and employer connections to set clients up for successful employment opportunities.
Clients complete an assessment to identify their current skill set, area of employment interests, strengths, and weaknesses. Based on results of the assessment, a Skill Up specialist then works with them to create an individual plan that will help them reach their employment goals or even start a new career.

The Skill Up program can also help clients:
  • Get skills they need through workshops and classes.
  • Pay for short-term training and certifications.
  • Pay for some daycare, work, or training costs.
  • Update or create resume.
  • Connect clients with employers.

Success Stories:

A single mom of two, was unemployed and lacked employment skills. She came to JFCAC and was receiving Food Stamps and Energy Assistance to make ends meet. She signed up for Skill-Up and completed welding training and received her welding certification from East Central College and is now employed full time, making $16.00 an hour, and achieved one of her goals of being self-sufficient for her family. May/2021

A client wanted to start her own business. She worked with her Skill-Up Specialist, created a work plan, researched what the business would entail, and just recently opened her own business. Her goal is to better her family and no longer need government assistance also. June/2021
